The effect of penetration of an external electric field into a cathode being in the nonequilibrium superconducting state and the cathode emissive properties have been calculated. The state of nonequilibrium superconductivity in its turn, is caused by the emission process itself. |

The heat treatment of Retrogression and Re-Ageing (RRA) has been applied to commercial alloy Al-7150 resulting in an improvement in the SCC resistance of material aged to peak strength. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field Ion Microscopy / Atom Probe (FIM/AP) analysis and Position Sensitive Atom Probe (POSAP) analysis have been used to investigate the matrix precipitate composition during various stages of the RRA treatment as a preliminary part of a wider study of matrix and grain boundary chemistry. TEM confirmed that there was an overall increase in precipitate size with retrogression time. For material retrogressed at 180oC there was a change in matrix precipitate appearance suggesting a change in precipitate type and/or chemistry. FIM/AP studies showed that RRA at 180°C caused a marked increase in the copper content of the mainly magnesium+zinc precipitates in agreement with the work of Brenner et al.[1]. The solute levels were found to be far from the equilibrium stoichiometry of MgZn2, there being more magnesium than zinc. Three dimensional POSAP analysis gave information about the precipitate size and morphology not available from conventional FIM/AP analysis due to the lack of precipitate imaging contrast in the FIM. In addition the composition of precipitates can be established including the Al content which is hard to determine using FIM/AP due to the small size of the precipitates. |

Atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM) and tomographic atom probe (TAP) have been used to study TiAi-based alloys. The element concentrations, the influence of additional elements such as Cr or Nb as well as the solubility of oxygen in alpha(2) (Ti3Al) and gamma (TiAl) phases in compounds with nominal concentration Ti54Al46 and Ti58Al42 have been determined. By using the detection of oxygen atoms as a very local probe, the present investigation revealed the existence of some intermediate phases during the phase transformation alpha --> gamma. The presence of the oxygen atoms during this transformation gives some peculiarities on the transformation path. The appearance of some metastable phases may be explained by the existence of the homologous series Ti2n-1Aln where n is an integer varying from 1 (stoichiometry TiAl) to infinity (phase alpha(2) Ti2Al). 3D Atom Probe, Aluminum alloys |
|
This paper outlines preliminary results from a combined XRD: TEM and APFIM investigation of a rapidly solidified Al94V4Fe2 alloy that had been produced by melt spinning. The microstructure produced consists of a high volume fraction (approximate to 50%) of 20 nm icosahedral particles in an f.c.c. matrix. Three-dimensional atom probe analysis shows that this second phase is enriched in iron and vanadium compared with the matrix. The thermal stability of the melt-spun ribbon has been investigated using DSC. It was found to be stable up to a temperature of 520 degrees C, after which there were two solid state transformations. The beneficial effect of Re on the high temperature properties of single-crystal nickel-based superalloys has resulted in a steady increase in the levels of Re used in these alloys. This paper reports an energy compensated 3D atom probe investigation of superalloy RR3000 after high temperature testing. Clear experimental evidence of pileup of Re solute atoms in the gamma matrix ahead of the growing gamma' particles was observed for both large primary gamma' rafts and also small secondary gamma' precipitates. The effect of the observed bow wave of Re on the rate of microstructural coarsening during precipitate growth is discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved. |
